Huawei P9 Lite now spotted at TENAA

The Huawei P9 Lite - which is yet to be announced by the company, but is already available for purchase in some European markets - has now been spotted on the website of Chinese telecommunication authority TENAA, suggesting an imminent launch in the Asian country.

The listing reveals that the device is powered by an octa-core 2.0Ghz chipset, and sports a 5.2-inch 1080p display. It comes with 3GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a 2,900mAh battery.

In terms of camera, the P9 Lite features a 13MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter. Measuring 146.8×72.6×7.5 and weighing in at 143g, the device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. Color options include gold, white, and black.

Sony rumored to launch Xperia M Ultra with 6-inch display, 23MP/16MP camera combo

According to a new rumor out of China, Sony will launch a new smartphone dubbed Xperia M Ultra. Specs-wise, the device is said to be powered by Snapdragon 652 chipset, and sport a 6-inch full HD display.

The device will have 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory, and pack in a large 4,280mAh battery. The camera department will be handled by a 23MP rear unit and a 16MP selfie shooter. It is also said to feature a USB Type-C port and a fingerprint sensor.

Aside from the the Xperia M Ultra, the Japanese company is also rumored to launch the successor to last year's Xperia C5 Ultra - allegedly dubbed Xperia C6 Ultra. Needless to say, none of this has been officially confirmed, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Huawei P9 Lite forgets it hasn't been announced, goes on sale

The P9 Lite is currently Huawei's worst kept secret. For whatever reason, the Chinese company decided not to unveil it alongside the P9 and P9 Plus, yet it's been spotted in many places recently. We've seen it offered by a Romanian retailer, and then we got some info about its pricing in Belgium.

Now the Huawei P9 Lite has been listed by a German online retailer, in three color versions. You can pick one up sans contract for €299, or you can grab a plan from a carrier alongside it and pay as little as €4.95 upfront.

The listing also mentions some of the phone's specs. The P9 Lite has a 1080p touchscreen, 16GB of expandable storage, a 13 MP rear camera with LED flash, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Huawei's EMUI 4.1 on top. Its dimensions are 146.8 x 72.6 x 7.5 mm, and it weighs 147g.

According to past leaks and rumors, the P9 Lite's screen should be 5.2" in size, and the handset will be powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 650 chipset, aided by 2GB of RAM. A 5 MP selfie camera and a 3,000 mAh battery should also be present.

Microsoft Lumia 650 finally lands at Cricket on May 6 for $129.99

It's been more than two months since the Lumia 650 got official, and on the same day that happened Microsoft basically confirmed that it would be headed to Cricket in the US. And today we finally get the full availability details from the prepaid carrier.

It turns out that Cricket will have an exclusive on the Lumia 650, so you won't be able to purchase the device from any other carrier. Obviously you can still buy an unlocked unit though.

Anyway, Cricket will be selling the handset from May 6, and it's priced it at $129.99. As is obvious, you're not going to sign any long-term contracts to grab it at that price.

The European Commission charges Google for abuse of dominant position

The European Commission has released a preliminary view that accuses Google of breaching EU antitrust rules by abusing its dominant position on the market. According to the Commission, Google has been imposing restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operators.

The State of Objectitions sent to Google say that the company has implemented a strategy on smartphones and tablets to preserve and strengthen its dominance in internet search. The reason behind this view is that Google Search is the preinstalled, set as the default, and in some cases exclusive search service in most Android devices in Europe.

The Commission considers that Google is dominant in the markets for general internet search services, licensable smart mobile operating systems and app stores for the Android mobile operating system.

There are also some remakrs regarding Google's attitude towards manufacturers. The company requires them to pre-install Google Search and Google Chrome browser, as well as settings Search as the default service on these devices, in order to have license to use proprietary Google software. Also Google doesn't allow manufacturers to sell smartphones or tablets running custom OS that's based on the Android open source code.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, says:

A competitive mobile internet sector is increasingly important for consumers and businesses in Europe. Based on our investigation thus far, we believe that Google's behaviour denies consumers a wider choice of mobile apps and services and stands in the way of innovation by other players, in breach of EU antitrust rules. These rules apply to all companies active in Europe. Google now has the opportunity to reply to the Commission's concerns."

In a response to the preliminary view, Google's senior vice president and general counsel, Kent Walker, said:

Android has helped foster a remarkable and, importantly, sustainable ecosystem, based on open-source software and open innovation. We look forward to working with the European Commission.

Google has been given 12 weeks to respond. If found guilty, the company will face a salty fine and most likely be required to change its practices.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) already available for purchase in Europe

When the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and Galaxy J5 (2016) were made official last month, there was no word on whether or not they'll be available outside of China. There have been reports since that the new J5 will be launched in Europe soon and now we learn the J7 is already on sale in the region.

Samsung Spain currently has the device listed on its official website for €299, and it's in stock, too. Curiously though, the model listed on the Spanish website has a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 (HD) and 2GB RAM, compared to the full HD display and 3GB RAM that were revealed when the phone was unveiled. The OS, on the other hand, has been upgraded to Marshmallow.

After Spain, France could be the next launch country for the new J series smartphones as Samsung's official website there is already listing support pages for SM-J510FN - a Galaxy J5 (2016) model. The handsets should make their way to other European markets as well, although we'll have to wait for some sort of official confirmation from Samsung on this.

Opera integrates free VPN in its developer channel

Opera has baked a free VPN service into the browser's developer channel and you can take advantage of it right away. The VPN is unlimited and you won't have to pay a dime to use it.

Virtual Private Networks are used to add a layer of privacy to web browsing and allow you to bypass geolocation restrictions on popular websites. Opera cites the Global Web Index, according to which 38% of users online use VPNs to access entertainment content, and 30% to keep their anonymity while browsing.

Facebook Messenger gains group calling feature

Facebook has announced that it's rolling out a new feature to its Messenger app that'll allow users to connect with their group through a VoIP-based group call.

The announcement came in the form of a Facebook post from Messenger chief David Marcus, who also noted that the update is expected to hit the app's iOS and Android clients in the next 24 hours.

"From any group conversations, just tap on the phone icon to initiate a group call. You can then manage individual participants on the next screen," he explained in the post. The new feature allows you to talk to up to 50 of your friends at any given time.

In case you aren't in the know, the Messenger app has received several updates in the past few months, bringing - for example - support for multiple accounts, material design make-over, and Dropbox integration.

Google will soon start displaying live TV listings in search results

Google has announced that it will soon start showing live TV listings in search results. This means, in future, when you'll search for a TV show on Google, the results will also contain a list of channels on which the show will be aired along with the date and time information.

"So now when you're looking for The Big Bang Theory, we'll not only show you the apps and sites where you can find the latest episode, but also show which channel you can turn your tv to later in the evening or week to catch it live," Google said in a blog post.

Motorola slashes Moto X Pure Edition price by $50 for limited time

If you are a Motorola fan, and are in the market for a good mid-range smartphone, here is some good news for you: the company has given its Moto X Pure Edition smartphone a decent price cut, although for a limited time only.

Google Chrome's mobile app now has over 1 billion monthly users

Google has revealed that the Chrome browser mobile app now has more than 1 billion active monthly users. With this, Chrome for mobile has joined other Google apps - including the Google Play store, Maps, Search, and YouTube - in the 1 billion+ club.

The milestone comes just five months after Chrome for Android and iOS hit the 800 million users mark. The search giant, however, did not reveal the total number of users on each mobile platform, although it would be reasonable to assume that Android leads the race.
